With the exceptions noted below, a person may register as a candidate in the Fort Erie municipal elections by completing the prescribed Nomination Paper Form 1, the Town Qualification and Registration forms and filing them together with the prescribed nomination fee with the Town Clerk. Nomination Kits are available at the Clerk's Office or you may click here to access forms electronically.
The nomination fee is $200.00 for Mayor and $100.00 for all other offices. The fee is payable in cash, by debit card, certified cheque or money order made payable to the Town of Fort Erie. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.
Prospective candidates must provide proof of identity and qualifying address when they file the nomination paper.
Exception: Candidates for the French Language Public and French Language Separate School Board Trustee must file their nomination papers with the Clerk of the City of Welland.
The Town Clerk will accept nomination papers for the 2014 municipal elections from January 2, 2014 to September 11, 2014, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (excluding holidays and emergency closures) and on Nomination Day, September 12, 2014 between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The nomination and qualification forms must be signed in front of a Commissioner for taking Oaths and Affidavits, etc. This service is offered free of charge at the Clerk’s Office.
The Municipal Elections Act, 1996 provides that documents filed with election officials shall bear only original signatures. For this reason, faxed or e-mailed nomination papers will not be accepted.
Documents and materials filed with or prepared by the Clerk or any other official under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 are public documents and, until their destruction, may be inspected by any person at the Clerk’s Office when the office is open.
The Clerk has until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 2014 to certify or reject a nomination paper. If the Clerk is not satisfied that the registered candidate is eligible to run, the nomination will not be certified and that candidate’s name will not appear on the ballot.
A registered candidate is permitted to withdraw his/her nomination paper by notifying the Clerk in writing by the close of nominations (2:00 p.m. September 12, 2014).
A registered candidate may change his/her mind and run for a different office by filing a second nomination paper. When the second nomination paper is filed, the first nomination is deemed to be withdrawn. Your nomination fee paid in respect of the first nomination may be applied to your second nomination if you are filing for a different office on the same council or school board.
Following the election, the nomination fee will be refunded to any candidate who withdrew or who received more than 2 percent of the votes cast for the office.
A list of Registered Candidates will be posted on the Election Pages of the Town’s website and in the atrium at Town Hall. The List will be updated each time a candidate files a nomination paper. In addition, the Clerk’s Office will email the updated list to each registered candidate, the Mayor and Council, Town employees (via the intranet) and to the Press.

If there are offices for which no candidates were certified or if there are positions still vacant after the certified candidates for the office were acclaimed, the nomination period will be reopened.
