A neighbourhood plan is a document that outlines Council's intention with respect to how a Neighbourhood will develop and redevelop in the future, usually over a 20-year period. It is prepared by municipal staff with the assistance of a Community Focus Group, and containing written policies and visual aids such as mapping and charts. The Plan identifies the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a defined area, and provides practical objectives that will result in an improved neighbourhood. A Neighbourhood Plan provides three essential things:

VISION
It provides a vision of how we want the neighbourhood to develop

GOALS
It sets out clear goals to achieve that vision

ACTION PLAN
It provides an action plan to reach those goals.

Neighbourhood Plans discuss and provide recommendations for key community issues such as land use, parking, building setbacks, urban design, parks and open space, guiding new development/redevelopment, and environmental preservation. The document is considered Council policy upon adoption, as a general guide for growth and development of a specific area of the town.

Town of Fort Erie Council has determined that the development and approval of Neighbourhood Plans is a priority item, and have allocated appropriate funding and staff resources to accomplish the task. There are a total of fifteen (15) urban neighbourhoods in the Town of Fort Erie that require a Neighbourhood Plan.
