Provided by the Fort Erie Museum


1837 - A bill is given royal assent that would have allowed for a canal at Fort Erie to bypass the rapids. An amendment proposed by W. H. Merritt all but makes this canal impossible by enshrining the primacy on the Welland Canal Co. (Welland County Historical Society Papers and Records, Vol. IV, Brig. Gen. E.A. Cruikshank ed., 1931, p. 111)
