1818 - First steamboat on the Upper Niagara River, Walk-in-the-Water is launched at Black Rock. (George A. Seibel, The Niagara Portage Road: 200 Years 1790–1990, Niagara Falls, Ont.: City of Niagara Falls, 1990, p. 129)


1855 - A notorious murderer and highway man called Townsend is shot and killed by Mr. John Maygood who was roused from his sleep by the commotion at his neighbour's house in Fort Erie. The criminal was preparing for his next heist. Mr. Maygood is acquitted and applauded by public officials for acting as a faithful citizen.
